Best travel route from Kansas City to Anchorage Alaska?
Should I fly North and then rent a car for the rest of the way? Mapquest says its a 70 hour trip by car, not really good. Has anyone made this trip? Suggestions welcome.

Answer 1 :
To fly roundtrip costs $600-800 and takes 8-11 hours depending on your preference. To drive 7025 miles takes 117 hours (15 days) and costs $3512 if you use the standard mileage rate or a bare minimum of $927 for just gas at $3.30 a gallon plus the cost of a motel if you stay in one. I can not imagine someone choosing to drive considering these factors.
Answer 2 :
It is more cost effective to fly vs drive. But, if you drive, you have 2 options. You can drive to Anchorage all the way. Another option is taking the Alaska Marine Highway. You can catch the ferry in Bellingham, Washington and take it up the inside passage (pretty much the same route as the cruise ships) to Haines, and then drive the rest of the way. Another option is they're now setting it up where you catch the ferry in Ketchikan (my hometown) or Juneau (i think) and then taking you up almost all the way to Anchorage. You'll end up getting in port about a 3 hour drive from Anchorage. It's a way to learn a lot about Alaskans, and the crazy bunch we are, plus relax and see some of the flora and fauna. It depends on if the financial aspect is the main focus, or the experience along the way is. Good luck!!!!!! And here is the link to the ferry. http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.html

How long would it take a train to travel from St Louis to Kansas City in the late 1800's?
Note I am talking about train travel in the early west, not the present.

Answer 1 :
Which decade in the late 1800's are you talking about? Steam locomotives in the early west were laughed at..and in one famous demonstration in about 1840 or so, a horse beat a steam locomotive in a race. But as the "decades" went by, the technology improved and the trains got faster. So a steam locomotive in the 1890's was a lot more powerful and faster than the one back in 1860's or 1870's , for instance. The average speed for steam locomotive in the late 1800's probably was around 25-30 mph +/- 10mph.(I'm guessing) Kansas city is about 250 miles away from St.Louis. So the trip should take about 8-10 hours. That's non-stop. Back in the day, trains make a lot of stops. That make the trip a lot longer

Answer 1 :
Does it really matter what race they are? I doubt you'll be able to search for travel agents based on race.
Answer 2 :
The Chamber of Commerce should be able to tell you if the business is minority owned. Why does it need to be an African American Travel Agent? That sounds a bit racist.
Answer 3 :
You sound a little prejudiced there Bro. What's wrong with just asking about a good well qualified TA?? It does appear the most blacks prefer using other blacks for business. Glad I don't stick to my own race when doing business. Let's be color free and move out of that mind set ok? Be open minded, it's 2007, not 1964. I deal with all races and treat everyone equally. Try it, you'll be glad you did!
Answer 4 :
I can understand you wanting to help out a fellow businessman of color and it's not racist at all...however I belive it might be hard to find out who is black and who isn't.
Answer 5 :
Just google Black Chamber of Commerce Kansas or Missouri or Black Entrepreneur Kansas or Missouri. Side note...Why do people think you're a racist when you support your own?
Answer 6 :
Try the local Chamber of Commerce. They may be able to help you. Another way would be to find a local church that has African American members and see if they can recommend who they use.
Answer 7 :
The Chamber of Commerce should be able to help you. But why is it that you are called racist because you want to patronize a black business? I don't get it people. Other races patronize their own all the time, and are not called racist. Get a grip people. Keeping the black dollar in the black community allows for the community to thrive and grow

About Is Kansas city a travel destination
Is Kansas city a travel destination?
Other than "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," what is the city famous for? Any scenic attractions? Are there many tourists from overseas? I often hear the name, but (no offence) honestly nothing comes to mind. Is it really a famous city?

Answer 1 :
It is a fun place to go, and there are things to do: the plaza, the power & light district, several museums and amusement parks to choose from....and world-famous BBQ [ever heard of KC Masterpiece?]. If you want to have a good time in KC, you easily could. If you were determined not to, well, then, you obviously wouldn't.
Answer 2 :
The Wizard of Oz wasn't from Kansas City it was from some random small town in Kansas. Kansas City, MO has a wonderful Plaza with shopping, dining, and movies, this is where a lot of people go. There is also a very big Theme park called Worlds of Fun and it has quite a few good rides like the Mamba, Patriot, Prowler, Boomerang, and many more, roller coasters. I don't see very international tourists because it's the middle of the country
Answer 3 :
If you're passing through the area, it has a few things to see and do that the other answerers have mentioned. Otherwise, you probably shouldn't go out of your way to come here.
